You are arching your car too 8) Spaceman now offers a kit (as fitted to my car) including fiberglass one piece front wings and rear arches - less expensive than the others out there (useful for when you bash them) and they are strong as I have demonstrated... Not as wide a Delage style kit and you don't need different front or rear bumpers or skirts to fit them. You know where to find him!

dummy build with z3 arms reveal its going to be wide! with standard wheel on it fills the arch well, so with an 18" wheel and an et of around 20 it should be good. shafts may need a spacer or a change of output shafts but no worries either way.

I use a compact beam with Z3M arms, et 32 17" X 8" wheels fill the standard arches perfectly.

:? :?:

No probs here using Z3M diff & shafts with E30 diff output flanges.

Edit: Sorry. Is your dummy build with non-M Z3 arms? :?:

Simon, Have you got a rear track measurement (accross hub faces) for your z-m arms and/or a disc braked compact? 8) i'm sure its been discussed on here before :?
We are going for the arches thats why we got some z3 arms to try.

The z3 2.0-3.0 rear arms we've used have a longer cast section below the hub where they meet the pressed section of the arm. This makes them 40-50mm wider each side compared to the drum braked arms. Everything else bolts up the same, however it looks like we'd need to use the longer z3 2.8/3.0 shafts or put a spacer between the shaft and the diff flange depending how it measures up 8)

Going to fiddle about with the front next and compare the standard kingpins to the m3 ones, i've only glanced at them at the moment, and want to know how they differ. Given some time we'd like to run a rose-jointed bottom arm with an adjustable compression strut, this way i can fiddle with the geometry working towards the caster that the e36 m3 bottom arms give.
I know you could say this probably isnt required but having fiddled around with standard stuff for a while it'll be good to explore its merits 8)

Probably been discussed on here before John, I've discussed it on several forums tho and I can't be sure/remember where.

I spent an hour+ measuring them all up with Uncle Russ, including E30 M3 arms/hubs and I recall him pointing out the wheel offset/deep dish on a Z3 M race car...

The Z3M rear arms on a Compact beam give an identical (or close to) track, to Compact arms. IIRC E30 arms also do.

The non-M Z3s fill their arches ok without a deep dish on the wheels. No idea what the OE et is with non-M Z3s, tho.

solid mounts for beam machined up and tube with the centre bored to diameter of beam bolts
Image
also solid mount tubes for diff that will run through the cage and bolt through from the inside of the car

Very nice John.

Do you do your own turning/machining?

The diff tubes are welded to the roll cage?

looking very nice :D
loving the solid mounts, are they going into any sort of production ???
i think that having pic up points for the diff though to the cage is a good idea when i had my diff out today i noticed how flexible the hole thing is. a must if your running big power though it

keep up the good work
I beg to diff-her

thanks for the comments :) todays efforts= old bushes out of the beam and fettle them to fit the caps (which fit like a dream) ,they will be welded into a better beam but this scabby thing will do to mock up with!! drilled floor to take pick-up tubes pictured with bolts tightened in which leaves 50mm of tube sticking out of the floor which will go straight through the cage tube.

Russ, we just measure ourselves, do a drawing and then get a local machine shop to do the turning.
The tubes will go through the rollcage cross bar, this method will keep the crossbar in one piece. The cage guy will do the rest

When i measured it up i realised the beam end bushes were not as tall as E30 ones, i'm also aware that commonly used full aluminium billets arent exactly light so i thought i'd adopt the caps c/w anti-crush tubes. I figured if there was enough of a void there would be negligable weight difference. We also wont get bi-metallic corrosion. We had a job sourcing long m12x1.5 studs, in the end went back to the trusty bmw etk and used R50 mini rear beam bolts 8) - They are perfect and high tensile, nicely shouldered etc

We pressed the caps into the beam ends and fitted the beam to the car, we soon apreciated high rigid the beam became 8) . To keep the diff height in check we pressed out the rubber from the diff cover mount and tack welded in a flat plate with an 12mm hole (height acurately measured) in it for the pinch bolt, You can just about see it on one of bro's piccies above. We then had reassurance the diff was fixed and cut the 2 holes in the floor 8)

If anyone has a very good non-rusty z3 or compact beam and front x-member please get in touch

had an eventful couple of days, went to harry hockleys on friday to pick up some bits
Image
and these
Image
very impressed with the quality, 8) we opted for these as it suits the look we are after, its going to be wide!! looks like we might be good customers for wings!!  but great help from martin at hhms. showed us how they fit the panels etc and showed us the duratec compact there building which is very bespoke, but nice all the same
back to the reality of the job :) and getting shell ready for cage today, so should give us some breathing space for build up suspension and blackhorse preparation :P
