This is the beginnings of my mates E30 build. Well not quite, we've been doing odd jobs on it for a while, but this year its come to stay with its Uncle :wink:

as time is going on and it needs to built and used by our mate Jonny Sprinter (who looks after the bruv's when we go rallying

).

The rolling shell came pre-caged from ebay :roll:

and all that glitters isnt gold especially when you collect it. Turned out it had had a bash at the front and been badly repaired. Since x-mas we've gutted it and cut the creased stuff off the front and put new in, in all the right places (basically all the front forward of the turrets). Weve put in new x-members and inserts for the sump guard and today have put in seat mounts and a platform for a vertical handbrake.

skinned engine mount tabs on x-member (cracks are common on the RHS)

We've got a mint e36 m42 motor out of an e30 318iS that we started to build with lightweight lifters, oversize throttle body and dbilas 280 cams. However a german tried stiffing us with some 256 schricks instead which we found out as soon as we started dummy building/timing. We've eventually been refunded our brass and now need to source some tepid cams and springs etc. We've progressed with oil cooling and baffling as posted on another thread. Engine mounts are as posted on another thread too.
Jonny is well impressed with Kex's 325i so the engine choice may change.

We've had 4.27 and 5.1 multi-plate diffs built up that should sort the gearing out for most venues and main man `kevo' has inspired us to build coilover billies with challenge shocks.

As for brakes we've got 300mm (i think) VAG discs for the front to which we'll add e30 m3 calipers via. an adaptor and at the rear we've got Z1 discs with m3 rear calipers (see e30.de). Jonny went to compbrake in the week and got a bias box to replace the servo.

new bearings in the arms, cut down backplates just to hold the parking brake, just waiting for polybushes for the rear beam.

between our houses (including our mums!!) weve got an e30 graveyard going on!!

hopefully the "sister" car shouldn't take too long, hoping to have it painted in a months time, so post i.o.m we can start bolting bits on again :shock:

setting goals already!!! :roll:

Its been a good refresher for the bruv's welding and fab. department.
Working on the underside this weekend

(hopefully) then we'll be on to the "glory jobs" after its painted....

after another positive saturday on the car ( alcohol fuelled!)

the underside of the bodyshell is virtually done, weld repairs and strengthening done and a coat of snow (white stone guard)

so next job is get it rolling for paint, and the bottom pic is the front re-enforced with captivated lugs for sump guard pickup.happy days

bit more graft done on the shell rear arch repairs done and covered with stoneguard also welded up the petrol filler cap as it's getting an alloy tank in the boot.

Latest news on this project:
Shell painted inside and out, and assembly started:

Back suspension nearly complete, 280mm Z1 discs with e30 m3 (7series) calipers

E36 m42 Engine progressing too, we matched the ports to the e30 ex. manifold and e30 injectors. Also done a dummy build now with catcams 279/274 cams to measure p-v clearances. Pistons now sent off for bigger cutouts and then balancing. Photos will have to follow (we had time constraints)
