E30RS3

Postby Toni » Wed Jul 13, 2011 1:17 pm

As some forum members know I drive a E30 316i rally car in the BTRDA gravel Championship. The car consists of parts from various types of BMW, i.e. E28, E30, E36, E39. The main bit; the engine, is M54B30. On the entries for events I always put BMW 316i; which the log book states. So, in Motorsport News reports and awards the car is always refered to as 316i. Well I am thinking of giving this hybrid mishmash of a rally car another model name for rallies, and thinking E30RS3.
Any thoughts anyone? or does 316i look like i'm a real giant killer :-)

what about 330i? you can even make yourself a 330i badge for the boot with a couple of chopped up badges.

OK; I will sort out some pictures when I have put the car back together. The cross member is probably better taking with it off the car; which it is.

More developments as I get ready for the Wyedean.

I have had an hip resurfacing operation which will allow toe and heeling easier :-)
The engine has had a Schrick exhaust cam to go with the inlet that went in last year: dyno this month.
The crankshaft harmonics are being sorted by using a mechanical damper (Rattler); due this month.
The box has been replaced with the one that came with the donor E39 530i; direct 5th
Diff is now 3.9:1 and welded for that fun factor!
The fuel tank has been replaced by a bespoke 9 gallon tank shaped as per Escort for spare wheel.
The exhaust will be modified with the exhaust tails exiting from both sides of the car where the tanks went.

Will provide some more dyno figures soon.

Mapped again just before the Wyedean but PDL's computer went belly up so only had 'hand held' bhp data at wheels: 198
I had adjusted the cam positions again after fitting the Schrick exhaust cam. No knowledge of torque curve but driving it on the road makes me very happy :-)
Obtained the 'Rattler' harmonic damper just before the rally and my hopes are high that the crank harmonics are now being fully absorbed.
If there is an absence of snow and ice on the Malcolm Wilson rally I should be able to evaluate the engines performance much better. On the Wyedean this was simply not possible.
