Not a lot of progress made over the last couple of days really, still waiting for the cage to arrive....

Been thinking about the brakes and managed to get hold of a new standard 330mm disc from a 130i/330i BMW. The disc is a direct fit as the uprights are the same throughout the model range. Anyway it looks like a very simple bracket will allow the radially mounted 4 pot caliper to fit quite nicely, this will make a inexpensive and powerful brake conversion to get started with and see how it performs. I can always upgrade later to proper racing discs and bells.



Project will be on hold for a week now as I'm off to compete on the "Omloop Van Vlanderen" (Tour of Flanders rally in Belgium) next week so got to get the C2R2 checked over etc this weekend and the van loaded up.

No progress to report really other than I've been weighing up the front brakes and made a bracket to position the 4 pot caliper in the correct position for the 330mm disc. I also worked out the offset required for an alloy bell if I decide to use racing discs. Also looking at fitting 300mm rear discs from the 120d but not sure yet what caliper to use.

Roll cage still not arrived but as I'm off to Belgium tomorrow it doesn't matter, hopefully it will arrive next week and I can get stuck in the following weekend.

I just chased up the cage delivery with Demon Tweeks, they checked with Custom Cages and it was despatched last Friday, I wonder where it's gone as it hasn't been delivered yet!

I'm interested in trying an overseas rally next year - can you tell us a bit more about your experience? Was it a one day event? I'm sure you'll enjoy RWD - but it will be quite a shock afer your C2R2

Just heard that the cage has been delivered !

As far as rwd is concerned I have had plenty of experience of it, rwd mk3 fiesta, rwd rover 200, westfields, caterham 7 etc also 4wd escort cosworth and Subaru impreza, I'm not a fwd fanatic although the c2r2 is actually good fun to drive but I prefer rwd!

The cage finally turned up today so I will soon be able to make a proper start on the shell. There's a hell of a lot of tubes but they're all nicely labelled up so it shouldn't be too difficult. There's lots of stiffening gussets too. Also they supplied quite a good DVD showing how to fit a cage and a CD with loads of still pics specific to the 1 series BMW cage. This is the first cage that I will have tackled with ready formed ends, all the others I've done in the past I've had to form all the joints as I went along so it should be much quicker and easier.

thats what I thought when I fitted a touring car spec custom cages jobby into a mk1 clio. Hope yours is profiled better than the one I did, cos at times I felt like sending the the offending tube back to them with a big "WTF?" sign attached to it

Knowing Martin he is already welding away in the garage and cutting toilet roll tubes to get the right shape on the end of the tube .
I will get over soon Martin to have a look at your new toy, Any events your aiming for with the new car or is it a suck it and see when it's done.
