swapped back to the original manifold the other day and found that it revs alot freer over 5k, also installed a set of cat cams 259/10.4 exhaust cam and a 267/11.0 inlet cam. it's made the thing rev lovely it comes on cam strongly at 5500 and pulls like a train up to 7000rpm and has improved the driveability of the car throughout the rest of the range, it's supposed to be flatter between 1000 and 200rpm but to be honest my car is so short geared that it's never in that rev range! i'll be getting a power run done at some point in the near future after the next two rallies this weekend and next.

Does it come on cam earlier than 5500? or is above 5500 where it is best at?
you say `swapped the manifold` do you mean the inlet?
what exhaust are you running? - We need a new for jonnysprinters.
Sounds like the standard valve springs/hydraulics are coping with the extra revs.

It pulls strongly throughout the whole range from 2000 on but really pulls hard at 5500 to 7000, as my car is so short geared though (e36 box and 4.45 diff). it may be a little different in yours? the thing is lightning quick up to 50 and it takes no time to reach a tonne as close to the redline as i want to hold her non competitively. i raced my brothers mk1 escort last night hes got a pretty high spec engine with ultra big valve head and various other bits and bobs and is pushing 137BHP on moselys dyno which is notoriously low for figures, he's had it all setup (2.1 pinto) and i thinks it's a few grands worth judging by the rest of the car which is seriously nice. anyway back to the point in a straight line he pulled about 3 metres on me both racing up to a 100-110ish (both cars redline). and i also had a passenger where he didn't. so that gives you some idea of the performance in real terms (if you know escorts).

as for manifold swapping, when i put the new engine in i put an e36 inlet manifold on as i understood it to be an upgrade i found the thing had real good mid range but i was changing up a cog at 5500 rpm cos it went better because of it, i have now reverted back to the original e30 inlet manifold which is a totally different design and it's changed totally, it revs loads better and is much freer at the top end, in combination with the cams it makes power at high revs now and has totally altered the way i drive the car. i don't have any dyno figures as of yet but will do at some point.

the exhaust system is standard up to the back box, i'm running a scorpion box and tbh i wouldn't like to recomend anything to you. the only thing i know is that the exhaust manifold is excellent as standard and should be kept as is, however the rest of the system i have could definitely be improved upon i think it's just time and money as usual which is stopping me, that and the fact that road rally rules don't permit any loud exhausts as they won't pass scruitineering. i'd be interested to see what you do regarding exhaust as i find my car doesn't have a particularly nice note tbh and would very much like to find one. i'll probably make one some point in the future and get it closer to the body and try and find that elusive note that i know this engine has.

as for the powerband i've heard of a few people who run theirs to 7200rpm and one 7500rpm. nut i've opted for a moderate increase which improves the way the car behaves.

one thing i'm going to try is to tweak the cams a bit, i.e. retard the inlet slightly as i'd prefer the thing to be at it's best at a little lower than the redline as it's better for the car if you know what i mean stress wise. i may have a potter tomorrow see if it makes any difference and let you know what i do.

what inlet manifold are you running? i know it's a bit of a clearance issue on the e36 to swap manifolds but i'm pretty sure it'd be worth doing. are you road rallying it too?


hi steve, yeah the manifold would fit as long as the head is the same as the e36 1.8 m42 which i'm pretty confident it is, i think you'll have clearance issues though with the bulkhead as the engine sits further back in the compact.

yes we are keeping the stainless ex manifold - it looks ok now weve had new stainless studs welded in it. The system is on its last legs so yeah we want one that tucks up nicely and is pretty quiet, we dont need grief when scrutineering

They dont list m44 ones, but i'd be surprised if they dont do them. Give them a ring or e-mail catcams.be direct, i think uk supplier is a place called regal m/sport

I thought the M42 and M44 were prettey much identical apart from 100cc

Never touched an m44 but the etk shows cam housings/followers revised. Catcams machine from billets and they look similar so see what they say.

Just to say hello and tell you of my exploits recently. I to did the 1000 Lanes in my 1.8is E36 coupe, and didnt get much further than Walters Arena selective due in the main to loosing the complete exhaust system about 100 yards after the start. The ensuing noise was just about bearable and all the marshals and spectators seemed to enjoy it
We werent allowed out onto the road sections so i slowly drove it home and found we's also lost both rear shocks and it felt like i was driving a blamonge tractor !! http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=IeejD5zusM4 about 2.5 mins through if you get bored watching
Illness took me out of it for almost 3 months after the 100 Lanes, during which nothing was done to the car. When finally recovered I got a local guy to fit some aquired M3 rear shocks and springs, but the fronts that came with it were just far too low...so its back to the "bits needed" column. (anyone want a pair of M3 struts?)
After a flurry of activity we finally got it ready for last weekends Greenleaves Road Rally and had a really good run ending up 17th and 3rd in class and winning a "pot" made it all the more worthwhile. It was an appauling night with rain and wind making the marshals job a nightmare as you can imagine, especiually on the moutain tops in Wales. The event started at the small village of Clyro not far from Hay on Wye and 120 miles later finished back there for a great brekkie.
We had our problems through the night like a puncture, a blowing exhaust, a temp light that flickered on an off a few times and a slipping clutch.
( You said you fitted an uprated clutch in your car would this be ok for mine ? If so do you remember the part number and where you got it from please?)
I'm busy now till xmas so wont be out again until the New Year so pleanty of time for the growing job list.

hi guys, alot of people have been asking me about my clutch and i can't find the receipt with the phone number etc. it was a company off e-bay though that made uprated clutches for any car, most companies make to order and it cost around £140 iirc. hope this helps? i'll keep digging though
