i'm no expert but i think this may have something to do with it, i'm not sure if it's still in tolerance or not so i'll get it properly measured to see if it's still reusable shortly

cheers all, but the blck is fine and dandy luckily, as is the head etc. i've even got the spare rods out of the other lump i took out to replace them with and will be putting them back in when i get chance.

how do all,
thought i'd have a go at lightening the flywheel, so here it is. i weighed it before and after to get a bit of geek data to laud about 
it weighed originally 9.35kg's i managed to safely get it down to 6.77kg's which is a saving of 2.58kg's or to be even geekier 27.5% less to balance it i put it onto a grinding wheel balancer and worked my way round till it stopped resting in the same position. it took me a while to do but it's pretty good now. oh and i also cleaned up the face of the clutch as it had gotten very ridged. i'm hoping to get it in soon and will be fitting the shorter ratio e36 box at the same time too. cheers Kev

How much did you remove from the clutch face? We have pulled the dowels out in the past and machined to maintain clamping pressure. 
i was wondering about removing the dowels and skimming it nut i wasn't sure. i took 0.4mm off to clean it up properly, i assumed that shouldn't make too much of a difference unless the clutch was fairly worn and as mine is only about 2000 miles old i left it.

Depends on how much you've taken off the friction surface tbh... I've heard of people having big problems after machining flywheels because they overlooked that, but 0.4mm is very little. Just have to see I suppose and adjust as necessary - unless the dowels are easy to get out in which case it might be worth doing in the long term.

i've been a busy boy, fitted the shorter e36 gearbox and my lightened flywheel today. went for a spin in her earlier and she's a pleasure! really well geared now and with 14's on she tops out at a ton. and she seems to rev alot quicker now too especially more noticeably at idle, incidentally it still idles like a road car too. am extremely happy, next job putting my scorpion exhaust on to try and extract some noise out of her as hes super quiet, 88db at noise last time.
