Looking at it from the left you'd think it looks not too bad

below bumper got it all

Drivers side got it worse though

brake pedal must have had some force on it at time of accident, coupled with bracing for the impact resulted in my L1 vertebra being crushed

sump guard peeled round like a sardine tin lid (passenger side view)

sump guard and suspension drivers side

will get it on a jig if it looks like I'll be fit enough to rally again

Bad news about your back, mate. Still, its something that many people make good recoveries from. To put it in perspective, I have a chum who had a medium speed frontal impact in a Sierra last year and his back got away with it - however, the force he was applying to the brakes caused his right femur to spear out through the back of his pelvis, shattering it like an egg shell - still hobbling around now. Not good.

I'd concentrate on getting yourself on the jig first.

Your back is with you for a long time, dont rush back. Come and have a look at the rallycross with us next year.

Our 325 project will be starting soon, I believe there will be at least 5 cars out next year so it should be fun

The (local hospital) Consultant gave me an examination, had a look at some fresh x-rays and confirmed everything is looking good with the metalwork around my crushed vertebra last week. Went on to say that providing everything looks ok in around 18 months time, then they will be looking at taking the metalwork out. "Great news" I said, he then went on to say that the reason that they try and take out the metalwork is that sometimes the screws snap. Don't really fancy that happening as the chances are that it will happen whilst I'm doing something strenuous and it could cause some (further) serious damage inside me.
So another operation will be required and then more recouperation, but if my back is ok, then I think I'd prefer to be free of any potential problems
Also had a physio assessment and am schedulled for some regular physio starting next week
Generally I'm making good progress and glad that I'm now getting some local NHS support.
Don't like taking all these meds but I'm lucky to have not be confined to a wheelchair

at least your driving again, how do you go about getting your m.s.a licence back? presume it's mandatory they revoke it after a hospital trip?

Just a thought though. Could they not have put an 8" zip in your back to make removal of the scrap iron an easier job?

Autotesting a wheelchair, not heard of that, but I have 'handbraked' one (whilst clowning around with a mate after a skying accident at Lake Tahoe) and left some pretty long skid marks after being pushed down a long pedestrian ramp at San Diego Zoo

I think the NHS is looking at a new income stream and wanting to weigh in all that stainless steel

Licence will be retained until my GP can complete a medical examination and can confirm in writing that I've fully recovered from my injuries and am fit to resume competitive driving. Hospital trip does mean that you will be required to send your comp licence to the MSA and then have a medical examination.......

..........8" zip in my back I did have 38 staples in rather than traditional stitches, which felt like a zip and had to be very careful scratching my back when it was itchy. After 10 days they removed them with a staple remover. That was bliss

It's amazing how contradictory the consultants have been on whether to remove the 'scrap iron' or leave it in! The Sheffield one said leave it in unless it gives a problem......and then proceeded to tell me that pain only exists in the mind, so don't let it control you! I've remembered this whilst doing a few things.......
